How to Wash Faux Fur

There’s a surprising amount of faux fur around, whether it's the trim on a gilet, your favorite beanie, a full-length coat, or that luxury throw on the sofa. Whatever form faux fur takes in your life, you’ll need to be able to care for it properly.

Taking the plunge and washing fake fur doesn’t have to be a brave step.

This guide explains how to wash and dry faux fur without ruining it—it’s easier than you think.

How Do You Wash Faux Fur Without Ruining It?

The general rule is to hand-wash faux fur, so we’ll look at that here. It’s not to say you can’t ever use a machine to wash it. However, hand-washing is safer and risks less damage.

If you do opt for a machine wash because the material is stained or grimy, don’t be tempted to use an HE (High-Efficiency) washing machine. While these work with less water, which can be a good thing, and they’re more spacious for large items than regular front loaders, agitating the garments just won’t suit faux fur fibers.

Prepare a Container with Water and a Gentle Detergent

Depending on the item’s size, you’ll need a large plastic container. The best option is the bathtub if you have a large coat or blanket.

Fill the container with cool water and 1-2 teaspoons of a mild detergent, whether liquid or powder. Alternatively, you could opt for a laundry detergent sheet.

With our laundry detergent sheets, you don’t have to worry. They don’t contain harmful chemicals, so there are no dyes, parabens, or brighteners. They'll wash delicate (and not so delicate!) clothing effectively using powerful enzymes to lift dirt and stains.

Freddie laundry sheets dissolve quickly in cold water, even away from the machine, and are perfect for washing faux fur.

Submerge the Item

Place the item in the water so it’s completely covered in the soap solution. Gently move it through the water in a swishing movement so the solution is slightly agitated and mobile. However, don’t swirl the garment around or pummel it.

Drain the Water and Rinse

Lift the garment from the water, place it into a sink or basin, and gently squeeze out any excess water; don’t wring the item out.

Empty the container and refill it with fresh, cool, clean water. Gently rinse the faux fur until there is no evidence of soap suds.

Remove Excess Water

Gently press the garment to remove any excess water. You can roll large items in towels and press down to help draw out water.

Drying Faux Fur

Dry the faux fur item by lying it flat on a rack or hanging it in the shower cubicle. Move the item frequently so it doesn’t develop crush marks. Dry away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Let the garment dry naturally.

Faux fur can take a couple of days to dry thoroughly. Don’t wear it or put the item away until it’s completely dry.

Never put faux fur items in a clothes dryer in a heat setting. Faux fur is made of synthetic fibers that will melt, fuse, and mat. This damage is irreversible, so the item will be ruined.

If you're in a hurry, you can use the fluff dry setting without heat in the tumble dryer. If the item isn’t huge, you can also use a hairdryer at a cold temperature and fluff the pile by hand.

Brush and Detangle

Once the faux fur is dry, it will be clumped together. Using a soft brush, gently work through the fibers as if you were grooming an animal; this will lift and separate them. Use a wide-toothed comb gently on any stubborn areas.

Treat and Condition the Faux Fur

Lay and smooth the fibers using a spray bottle containing one teaspoon of mild conditioner and two cups of tepid water. Mist the spray over the material while gently brushing with a soft-bristled brush.

Tamp the fur gently with a clean cloth before leaving to dry naturally in a cool, well-ventilated area.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Happens if You Machine Wash Faux Fur?

You can machine wash fake fur, but you need to choose a cool setting for delicates and avoid using chemical-based detergents. Laundry detergent sheets are the best option, as they have powerful cleaning agents but are still gentle on delicate fabrics. Avoid using a High-Efficiency washer, as this will damage the fur.

How Do You Make Faux Fur Fluffy Again After Washing?

Allow the item to dry naturally, away from direct heat and sunlight. If necessary, hang it so it can drip or dry it flat. Once dry, groom the fur with a soft-bristled brush, allow it to dry again, and then spritz it with a mix of dilute conditioner to make it fluffy again.

What Happens to Faux Fur in the Dryer?

It’s generally best not to put faux fur in the dryer, but if you must, use a cool, fluff-up program for a short period. If you use even a small amount of heat, you run the risk of melting the fibers, which will fuse together in a mat. This damage is irreversible - you won't be able to brush it out.
